AVIF is highly space-efficient but not yet universally supported, plenty of photo editors, older devices, and some platforms still can't open it. Converting AVIF to PNG trades that efficiency for a format that opens virtually everywhere and won't lose any further detail once converted. If the source AVIF was saved with lossy compression, which is the common case, this conversion can't recover whatever detail was already discarded, it just locks in what's there. This tool converts AVIF to PNG directly in your browser, no software to install and no file uploaded to a server.

How to use

  1. Upload your AVIF. Drag an AVIF file onto the drop zone or click to browse. Only AVIF files are accepted for this converter.
  2. Click Convert to PNG. There's no quality slider to set, PNG encoding is lossless, so there's no quality trade-off to choose. Any transparency in your AVIF is preserved.
  3. Download your PNG. Click Save to download the converted file, or Save As to pick the filename and location yourself.

AVIF vs PNG

AVIF is a modern, highly space-efficient format that can be lossy or hold transparency, but support outside of current browsers is still limited, many photo editors, older operating systems, and some platforms can't open it. PNG is lossless and essentially universally supported, which makes it the safer default when broad compatibility matters more than minimal file size. Converting AVIF to PNG doesn't change what the pixel data already is, it changes the container: if the source AVIF used lossy compression, whatever it discarded during that original encoding is already gone and stays gone, the PNG just guarantees no further loss and opens everywhere from here on.

Tips for best results

  • Use this when a tool won't accept AVIF. AVIF support is still inconsistent outside of modern browsers. Converting to PNG sidesteps the compatibility problem for editors, older software, and platforms that don't recognize AVIF yet.
  • It won't undo lossy AVIF compression. If your source AVIF was saved at a lossy quality setting, any detail it discarded during that original encoding is permanently gone. The PNG will look the same as the AVIF, not better, just in a more compatible, lossless-from-here container.
  • Transparency carries over. If your AVIF has a transparent background, the PNG will too, both formats support an alpha channel.
  • Expect a larger file than the AVIF source. PNG's lossless compression is generally less space-efficient than AVIF's, so the resulting file will typically be noticeably bigger than the AVIF you started with.

Why use PixMidas

  • 100% private. The conversion redraws your image on a canvas and re-encodes it entirely in your browser. Your AVIF is never uploaded to any server.
  • Honest about what it can't fix. If your source AVIF already lost detail to lossy compression, this conversion won't bring it back, it locks in what's there and stops further loss.
  • No account needed. Free and instant. Works in any modern browser, no installation required.

Frequently asked questions

Will converting AVIF to PNG restore any quality lost when the AVIF was created?

No. If the source AVIF was saved with lossy compression, whatever detail it discarded during that original encoding is already gone from the pixel data, and no later format conversion can bring it back. Converting to PNG simply stops any further quality loss from this point on, since PNG is lossless and won't discard any more data.

Why would I convert AVIF to PNG instead of just using the AVIF?

Mainly for compatibility. AVIF is well supported in current browsers, but many photo editors, older operating systems, and some platforms still can't open it. PNG is accepted essentially everywhere, so converting sidesteps that problem.

Will the PNG be larger than my AVIF?

Usually, yes, often significantly, since AVIF's compression is considerably more space-efficient than PNG's for most image content.

Does my image keep its transparency?

Yes. Both AVIF and PNG support a transparency (alpha) channel, so if your source AVIF has a transparent background, the converted PNG will keep it.

Is the PNG lossless from here on?

Yes. Once converted, the PNG format itself won't introduce any new compression artifacts on future saves. What it can't do is remove artifacts that were already present in the source AVIF if that AVIF was lossy to begin with, those are permanent, the PNG just guarantees no further damage.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The entire conversion runs on your device using your browser's Canvas API. Your AVIF is read locally, redrawn, and re-encoded as PNG without ever being sent anywhere.
