Every photo taken on a smartphone or digital camera contains hidden metadata called EXIF data, a block of information embedded in the image file that includes the GPS coordinates where the photo was taken, the exact date and time, the camera make and model, the lens focal length, ISO settings, and sometimes even the device's serial number. When you share these photos online, on social media, through email, or via messaging apps, this metadata often travels with the file unless explicitly stripped. Removing EXIF data is a simple privacy step that prevents unintentional location disclosure and device fingerprinting.
How to use
- Add your photos. Drag one or more JPG or PNG files onto the drop zone or click to browse. The tool accepts batch uploads so you can clean multiple photos at once.
- Review the metadata (optional). For each photo, the tool shows what EXIF data was found before removal, GPS coordinates, timestamp, camera model, and other fields. This helps you see exactly what would have been shared with the original file.
- Remove and download. Click Remove EXIF to strip all metadata from the file. The cleaned photo downloads with identical visual content but no embedded metadata. The image dimensions and quality are unchanged.
Tips for best results
- Strip before posting to public forums. Even if a social media platform strips EXIF on upload, the metadata is present in the file you share via direct download, email, or any channel that doesn't strip it automatically. Remove it yourself before the file leaves your device to be certain.
- Remove EXIF before selling or listing items online. Marketplace photos can reveal your home location if GPS data is present. This is particularly relevant for photos taken indoors at a private address.
- Use the image info tool to verify. After stripping, use the image info tool to confirm that no metadata remains in the cleaned file before you share it.
- Consider compressing afterward. Removing EXIF doesn't reduce file size significantly on its own. If you also need a smaller file for upload, run the cleaned photo through the image compressor after removing the metadata.
Why use PixMidas
- 100% private. EXIF removal runs entirely on your device. Your photos are never uploaded to any server, critical when the whole purpose is preventing your data from reaching unwanted parties.
- Shows what was removed. Unlike tools that silently strip metadata, this tool shows you the EXIF fields that were found before removal so you can see exactly what information was embedded in your file.
- No account needed. Free and instant. Metadata removal runs locally on your device.
Frequently asked questions
What is EXIF data?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is a standard for storing metadata inside image files. It was originally designed so cameras could record technical shooting information alongside the image. Common EXIF fields include: GPS latitude/longitude (where the photo was taken), DateTime (exact time of capture), Make and Model (camera brand and model), FocalLength, ISO, ShutterSpeed, Aperture, and sometimes the software used to process the image. All modern smartphones and cameras embed EXIF data in every photo by default.
Do social media platforms remove EXIF data?
Most major platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X) strip EXIF data when images are uploaded and processed through their servers. However, this protection only applies to images viewed through the platform. Direct file downloads, links to original files, file sharing in chat, email attachments, and platforms that don't process images (many forums and file hosts) preserve the original EXIF data. Stripping EXIF yourself before sharing ensures protection regardless of the destination platform.
Does removing EXIF change the image quality or appearance?
No. EXIF metadata is stored in a separate data block within the image file and is not part of the visual pixel data. Removing it has zero effect on image quality, dimensions, or appearance. The visual content of the photo is completely unchanged. The file size typically decreases by a very small amount (a few kilobytes) after EXIF removal since the metadata block is deleted.
Can I remove EXIF from PNG files?
Yes. While EXIF was originally designed for JPEG files, PNG files can contain similar metadata in their text chunks. This tool removes metadata from both JPG and PNG files. WebP and other formats may have metadata in different structures, for those, the image info tool can show what fields are present.
How can I tell if a photo has GPS data before stripping it?
Use the image info tool to inspect the full EXIF contents of any photo. It shows all metadata fields including GPS coordinates in a readable format. You can then decide whether to strip the data or not before sharing the file.
Are there privacy risks beyond GPS data?
Yes. Camera serial numbers in some EXIF implementations can be used to link photos taken by the same device. Timestamps can reveal daily routines. The software field reveals what apps or editing tools you use. For public sharing, stripping all EXIF data is the simplest way to eliminate all of these metadata-based tracking vectors simultaneously.
