HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format on iPhone and iPad, introduced with iOS 11. While HEIC files are about half the size of equivalent JPGs at the same quality, the format isn't supported by most Windows apps, Android devices, older Macs, web browsers, or social media platforms without a conversion step. This tool converts HEIC and HEIF photos to standard JPG directly on your device, no software to install, no account to create, and no file upload to a cloud server.

How to use

  1. Open your HEIC file. Drag one or more HEIC or HEIF photos onto the drop zone, or click to browse your files. Photos taken on iPhone 7 and later default to HEIC format when HEIC storage is enabled in iOS Settings.
  2. Conversion starts automatically. Each file is processed immediately after upload using a WebAssembly-based decoder. No configuration is needed, the tool detects the HEIC format and converts it to JPG at high quality.
  3. Download your JPGs. Click Save for individual files or Save All to save all converted images at once. The output filename matches the original with a .jpg extension.

Tips for best results

  • Check your iOS export settings. If you want your iPhone to export JPG directly when sharing, go to Settings → Camera → Formats and select "Most Compatible." HEIC files will then only be used for local storage, and exported copies will be JPG by default.
  • Convert before uploading to web apps. Most cloud storage services, social media platforms, and web-based tools do not accept HEIC. Convert your photos to JPG first, then upload the converted files to avoid compatibility errors.
  • Compress after converting. HEIC photos converted to JPG are often 2–4× larger than the original HEIC file because JPG is less efficient at the same quality. Use the image compressor after conversion to bring the file size back down if needed.
  • EXIF metadata is preserved. HEIC files carry extensive metadata including GPS location, camera model, and timestamp. This converter preserves that metadata in the output JPG and corrects the rotation tag so images display correctly everywhere. If you need to strip location or other sensitive data before sharing, use the EXIF remover after converting.

Why use PixMidas

  • 100% private. Conversion uses a WebAssembly HEIC decoder running entirely on your device. Your photos are never uploaded to any server, they are decoded locally and exported as JPG files without any network transfer.
  • Batch support. Convert multiple HEIC files in one session. Each file is processed independently, and you can download them individually or all at once.
  • No account needed. Free, instant, and works on any device with a modern browser, including Mac, Windows, and Android.

Frequently asked questions

What is HEIC and why does my iPhone use it?

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container, a format based on the HEVC video codec. Apple adopted it as the default camera format with iOS 11 in 2017 because HEIC files are approximately half the size of equivalent JPGs at the same perceptual quality. This saves storage on your iPhone without visible quality loss. The trade-off is that HEIC files are not natively readable by many non-Apple platforms, requiring conversion for broader use.

Will I lose quality converting HEIC to JPG?

The conversion involves re-encoding the image, which can introduce minor quality differences. This tool encodes at 92% quality, which is visually indistinguishable from the source in the vast majority of photographs and matches the quality Apple's Photos app uses when exporting to JPEG. The more significant change is file size. A converted JPG will typically be larger than the original HEIC file because JPG is a less efficient codec. Use the image compressor afterward if you need to reduce the file size.

Why is there no quality slider?

We use a fixed 92% quality setting that preserves full visual quality with reasonable file size. This is the industry-standard quality level used by Apple Photos when exporting to JPEG, and independent testing shows it is perceptually identical to 100% for real-world photographs. A slider adds complexity without meaningful benefit for typical photo use. If you need to compress further after converting, use the image compressor for precise file size control.

Why can't Windows open HEIC files?

Windows does not include HEIC codec support by default. Microsoft offers a paid HEVC Video Extensions codec in the Windows Store, and some versions of Windows 11 include limited HEIC support. Older Windows versions have no native HEIC support at all. Converting to JPG eliminates the compatibility problem entirely since JPG is supported everywhere without any additional software.

What's the difference between HEIC and HEIF?

HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) is the container specification, and HEIC is the specific variant that uses HEVC encoding for still images. In practice the terms are used interchangeably and refer to the same thing in the context of iPhone photos. Both .heic and .heif file extensions are supported by this converter.

Does this converter work on Android?

Yes. Because the conversion runs on your device via WebAssembly, it works on any modern browser, Android Chrome, Firefox, Safari on iOS, Edge on Windows, and desktop browsers. No app installation or platform-specific software is needed.

How do I stop my iPhone from taking HEIC photos?

Go to Settings → Camera → Formats and select "Most Compatible." This switches the camera to JPG/H.264 capture. For transferring existing HEIC photos to a non-Apple device, go to Settings → Photos and select "Automatic" under Transfer to Mac or PC, iOS will convert them to JPG automatically when transferring via USB.
